Understanding Packaging Materials

Packaging materials are often described using abbreviations such as PET, PE and AL. Each material serves a different purpose, from providing strength and flexibility to protecting products against moisture, oxygen and light.

Here's a simple guide to the materials commonly used in flexible packaging.

PETPolyethylene TerephthalateA strong, durable film commonly used as the outer printable layer.
PEPolyethyleneA flexible plastic commonly used as an inner sealing layer.
ALAluminium FoilProvides excellent protection against light, moisture and oxygen.
VMPETVacuum Metallised PETPolyester film with a thin metallic coating that provides barrier protection.
BOPPBiaxially Oriented PolypropyleneA lightweight, durable film with good printing properties.
CPPCast PolypropyleneA flexible polypropylene film commonly used for heat sealing.
PAPolyamide (Nylon)A strong, puncture-resistant material used in specialist packaging.
KraftKraft PaperA paper material used to create a natural, textured appearance.

How Packaging Materials Work Together

Many flexible pouches are made using several layers of material. Each layer performs a different function, helping create packaging suited to the product inside.

  • PET / PE

A durable outer film combined with a flexible sealing layer. Commonly used for general-purpose flexible packaging.

  • PET / AL / PE

Combines a printable outer layer, aluminium foil barrier and inner sealing layer. A popular high-barrier structure for sensitive dry products such as matcha and tea.

  • PET / VMPET / PE

Uses a metallised barrier layer to help protect products against moisture and oxygen. Suitable for a range of dry food and retail packaging applications.

  • Kraft / PET / PE

Combines a natural paper-look exterior with protective plastic layers. Suitable for brands seeking a kraft appearance with additional packaging functionality.

  • Mono PE

A predominantly polyethylene-based structure designed to support recyclability where suitable collection and processing facilities exist.
